Controversial apartment complex with reduced parking approved by council
The construction of a controversial 60-apartment subdivision with a less-than-standard number of parking spaces was approved by the Longyearbyen Community Council, but with harsh criticism from some members who accused some city officials and the builder of trying to force the project through without proper debate.

Leak on freighter ship seriously damages six vehicles, other cargo
Some of the cargo aboard the Norbjørn freighter, including six vehicles, suffered serious water damage during a voyage from Tromsø to Longyearbyen, according to the shipping company responsible.

Record number of fire alarms; kitchen fires a particular concern
The Longyearbyen Department received a record 187 alarms during 2017, 15 of which were fires or ignitions. Of those, 11 were due to “dry cooking,” which often happens late at night when intoxicated people fall asleep while cooking.

Loose dog attacks reindeer, forcing officials to kill it

Seed vault to get new entry, admin building due to faults

The entrance to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, which has already spent 37 million kroner to repair leakage and drainage problem, will now be demolished and rebuilt with a waterproof door and reinforced concrete tunnel, according to Stasbygg.
