Doggonit, what’s that plane doing here? Air Force craft lingers in Longyearbyen after bringing dogs for police training
Yes, that’s a Royal Norwegian Air Force plane that’s been parked at Svalbard Airport since Sunday and, yes, the police are taking a serious interest in the matter – but not because it’s not violating the Svalbard Treaty, according to the governor’s office.
The plane is being used to transport dogs that are receiving police training to and from Svalbard, said Police Chief Lt. Trond Olsen. He said there’s nothing illegal or particularly unusual about the use of the plane.

We have seen the future of coal mining in Svalbard and, to paraphrase a certain idiot dominating politics in the U.S., there’s just going to be so much winning we’re all going to get tired of it. How can it be otherwise, now that North Korea has signed the Svalbard Treaty since, as their official news agency never ceases reminding us, they’re super productive and efficient in ways the evil warmongers in the West will never be.

For the first time since the coal mining crisis hit Longyearbyen with full force more than a year ago, it’s a good thing a lot of folks are in a crabby mood.
They’re also raising a stink about fish – again in a good way – as Norway’s Marine Resources Act was amended earlier this month to give Svalbard the same commercial fishing and processing regulations as the mainland. While that’s unlikely to replace all of the hundreds of lost coal-related jobs, it’s potentially a key part of the city’s post-mining future.

Airlines are now being required to submit the names of all passengers on all scheduled and charter flights to The Governor of Svalbard before traveling to the archipelago. In addition, persons banned in mainland Norway can now also be exiled from Svalbard due to a change in entry requirements announced Friday by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
