One crew member aboard the Norwegian Coast Guard’s KV Andenes has tested positive for COVID-19 and the other 61 aboard will be placed in quarantine following a voyage in Svalbard that began July 24 and picked up a group of Norwegian Polar Institute researchers at Bjørnøya, the coast guard announced in a press release Wednesday evening.

A shrimp trawler abandoned in the northenmost part of Svalbard last December after suffering leaks and engine failure now has severe damage including numerous holes in the hull and is listing at an angle of 75 to 80 degrees, according to officials who say a removal attempt is scheduled for August after the sea ice is gone and breeding season for seabirds over.

A shrimp trawler that put its 14 crew members in fear of their lives when it partially sank in the northernmost part of Svalbard in late December is offering gruelling, but invaluable and unprecedented knowledge to the emergency officials from several agencies involved in rescuing the crew and the subsequent months of salvage operations in the harsh winter environment, according to a report issued following the latest operation this week.

A fishing trawler stranded in the northernmost part of Svalbard appears intact three days after 14 crew members were removed by rescue helicopters, but officials conducting an observation flight by helicopter above the vessel Sunday said they are anxious to begin the challenge task of removing the vessel before the harsh conditions tear debris or fuel loose.

The deck of the M/S Langøysund tour boat caught fire in Isfjorden shortly before noon on Thursday, according to The Governor of Svalbard.but was extinguished by the crew a short time later with no major injuries to the 34 people aboard, but one crew member was treated at Longyearbyen Hospital for smoke inhalation.

A dozen students and staff at The University Centre in Svalbard spent seven bitterly cold and wet hours in a small boat at sea Friday – most of them pumping out water from a leak that caused the engines to fail – before being rescued by the Norwegian Coast Guard, according to officials.
