Cracks discovered Tuesday afternoon on the mountainside above homes in Gruvedalen resulted in the evacuation of a dozen more residences due to the risk of landslides, according to The Governor of Svalbard.
“The evacuation will start immediately and be carried out before 6 p.m.,” . the Gov. Kjerstin Askholt said in a prepared statement issued at about 4:15 p.m.
The residences being evacuated are 232.522, 232.524, 232.526, 232.528, 232.530, 232.532, 232.534, 232.536. 232.538, 232.540, 232.542 and 232.544. All residents of those home must then registered at the emergency crisis center at Kulturhuset
In addition, the governor has closed a 500-meter stretch of road on the coastline at Vestpynten (the dirt road extending to cabins beyond Svalbard Airport due to unstable soil) and the dog kennel area just outside Longyearbyen is also closed.
