STORM UPDATE: Evacuation of Nybyen lifted, no major damage reported as worst passes


An evacuation of Nybyen was lifted Thursday afternoon, and no major avalanches or damage were reported following a major snowstorm Wednesday night and Thursday morning, according to The Governor of Svalbard.

STORM ALERT: Blizzard ‘reminiscent’ of storm last Dec. 19 – with less snow – expected to hit Wednesday night, Thursday


Update (1:20 p.m. Tuesday): The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has issued a storm alert forecasting gale-force winds of 90 kilometers an hour and gusts to 135 kilometers an hour in exposed locations. Peak winds are expected between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 3 a.m. Thursday.

In addition, avalanche conditions are forecast to be near or at maximum risk levels, although their predicted potential size is signifianctly smaller than the one last Dec. 19. The story below has been updated.

Original story: A blizzard “reminiscent of the storm on Dec. 19 of last year” is expected to bring up to 14.4 millimeters of precipitation and winds up to 135 kilometers an hour, according to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.



Update 3:45 p.m.: Emergency officials are scheduled to meet at 11 a.m. Monday to determine if some areas should be closed and/or evacuated, according to a statement issued by The Governor of Svalbard. Vei 300 between Huset and the old museum, where the largest of last month’s landslides occurred, will be closed as of Monday morning.

Original story: A storm is expected to bring up to 50 millimeters of rain to Longyearbyen and up to 100 millimeters of precipiation in some surrounding mountains during a 24-hour period Monday and Tuesday, resulting in a significant risk of landslides and other hazards, according to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

ALERT: Advendalen flooding blocks road, strands drivers and snowmobilers


Update 7:10 p.m.: Frank Jakobsen, director of LNS Spitsbergen, states “crews are working to clear the road, but “we recommend that all unnecessary driving in Adventdalen be avoided.”

Original article: Heavy flooding in Advendalen has blocked the road at the Bolterdalen river, leaving vehicle and snowmobile drivers stranded, and other rivers are at risk of overflowing.

“Slush wave and lots of water have made the main Adventdalen road impossible to pass,” wrote Tom Foreman in a post on a Longyearbyen community Facebook page, noting he is touch with people on the other side of the river. “Slush building up on the road and more water building behind the road and slush dam. Very dangerous. Trucks and snowscooters apparently stuck out there already.”

AVALANCHE UPDATE: Gathering places for evacuees, relatives open Sunday; Bruktikken open for those needing clothing, etc.


Several locations for people forced to evacuate their homes, relatives of those injured, and others affected by Saturday’s storm and avalanche will remain open Sunday. In addition, Bruktikken will be open starting at 10 a.m. for people needing clothing, bedding and other necessities.
