Signs are increasingly bleak Svalbard will return to anything resembling a “normal” cruise ship season this year as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to mutate and spread, but tourism officials are hoping vaccines will allow at least some of the season to be salvaged for the smaller “expedition” vessels that made limited sailings here last summer.

A British woman leading a large-scale campaign to reduce waste and clear trash from coastlines in Svalbard – where she was working only a few days ago – was among the 157 people killed when Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET 302 crashed Sunday, according to officials.

It’s no longer a dirty secret: Svalbard’s shores are far from a pristine Arctic paradise and it’s going to take serious money and effort to combat the ongoing and worsening accumulation of trash on them.

That reality was recognized in the latest round of semi-annual grants from the Svalbard Environmental Protection Fund, with nearly a third of the 15.6 million kroner for 40 projects awarded to ocean and coastal cleanup efforts.

Having cracked down on where humans can go and do in east Svalbard, officials are now looking west.

Visitors will soon be forced to clean their shoes and clothes to remove unwanted seeds, ships banned from discharging any form of wastewater near shore, and birds granted larger sanctuaries if provisions in a new management plan for west Spitsbergen are enacted.
